The Southville 3A NHS Maritime Program, held in partnership with Westminster and the Adopt a Ship initiative, opened with a warm and heartfelt welcome address from Ms. Alaiza Arias, AP Society Adviser. She expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to run the program and commended the students for their enthusiasm in exploring the maritime industry. Capt. Seferino Leal Jr., President of Westminster, followed with an inspiring message on the importance of communication among officers onboard. He reminded students that maritime professions are not confined to men alone, encouraging them to pursue careers in this rewarding field. Mr. Francis Faner then shared meaningful insights, emphasizing that while life at sea offers adventure, it also demands responsibility. 'Seafarers are the backbone of global trade,' he noted, underscoring their crucial role in transporting goods worldwide, and inspired students with the message: 'Be a captain on your journey.' The program also featured Mr. George Hoyt, IMO Goodwill Maritime Ambassador, who highlighted that 90% of global goods are transported by ship. He stressed the indispensable contribution of seafarers and urged students to support and encourage peers who aspire to a maritime career. To close, Mr. Jeffrey Aldas, Managing Coordinator of AASI, expressed his excitement for the upcoming sessions of the Adopt a Ship program, which will provide students with practical, hands-on learning in maritime education. Overall, the event served as an inspiring launch, opening the horizon of opportunities in the maritime profession for young learners.
