Horizons Explored: PCSHS Maritime Career Seminar Inspires Future Seafarers

On April 22, 2024, Pacita Complex Senior High School held an enlightening career orientation seminar, dedicated to guiding about 500 senior high school students towards future paths, particularly within the maritime industry. The event welcomed distinguished guest speakers from the industry, each offering invaluable insights and firsthand experiences. Mrs. Divina Repedro, Chief Financial Officer of Hartmann Crew Philippines, stood as an example of female empowerment in a traditionally male-dominated field. Her address shed light on the shore-based aspects and financial opportunities of maritime affairs. Underlining the inclusive nature of the profession, Mrs. Repedro’s encouraging words urged young women to break barriers and explore opportunities in this dynamic career path. Meanwhile, Capt. Nilgie Morandarte, a seasoned mariner actively involved in the AAS program from Dohle Seafront, shared his remarkable journey from humble beginnings to commanding a ship. Through personal narratives, Capt. Morandarte depicted the triumphs and challenges of seafaring life, instilling resilience and determination in students to pursue their dreams relentlessly. Mr. George Hoyt, the IMO Goodwill Maritime Ambassador and Global Coordinator of Adopt AShip InterNational, delivered a captivating presentation underscoring the pivotal role of the maritime industry in the Philippines. With video excerpts featuring President Marcos addressing the "Shaping the Future of Shipping-Seafarer 2050 Summit,", Ambassador Hoyt showcased the government's commitment to industry transformation and sustainability. Additionally, by screening a video titled "Wings of Awareness",Spreading Wings of Awareness Maps Film he illuminated shipping's significance in daily life, global trade, and the economy. To further enrich students understanding, the seminar included interactive question and answer sessions. The seminar concluded with Ambassador Hoyt honoring the school administrator and guest speakers with prestigious IMO SDG pins, symbolizing their dedication to nation-building, educational excellence, and sustainable development. The event fostered an atmosphere of optimism and vitality, igniting a shared vision for the future of the maritime industry among students.
